How To Keep Your Smile Looking Great With Oral Health Tips
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA-Cosmetic dentistry has the power to create beautiful smiles, but those smiles’ beauty is only superficial if the teeth are not healthy.
Dr. Khalil “Dr. Sage” Saghezchi says a beautiful smile includes attractive teeth properly cared for with excellent dental hygiene and nourished with a balanced diet.
“I would hope that everyone has the goal of keeping their natural teeth for as long as possible,” says Dr. Saghezchi, who is a Cupertino dentistry expert with nearly 25 years of experience. “These five suggestions will help your teeth stay strong, healthy and beautiful.”
Good Oral Hygiene Starts At Home
Brush teeth at least twice a day, once after breakfast and once before bed, with fluoride toothpaste to remove food debris and plaque that cause dental decay. Use floss or an interdental cleaner between teeth to remove food particles and plaque between teeth daily. Replace toothbrushes every two to three months.
Don’t Forget Dental Appointments
Seeing a dentist regularly, at least twice a year, keeps teeth healthy and happy. During each appointment, Dr. Saghezchi conducts an oral examination and professional teeth cleaning. He also monitors the mouth for any signs of periodontal disease or oral cancer and discusses any concerns or questions the patient may have.
“Good dental health also hinges on promptly treating areas damaged by dental caries or tooth loss. Repairing, restoring and replacing where necessary prevents problems from worsening or doing permanent damage like bone loss caused by missing teeth,” says Dr. Saghezchi, who offers restorative dentistry procedures like tooth-colored fillings and porcelain inlays and onlays.
Refrain From Using Tobacco-Based Products
Any tobacco-based products, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco, cigars, have a negative impact on oral health. Using tobacco increases the risk of oral cancer, periodontal disease and delays healing after a tooth extraction or other oral surgery. Certain dental restorations like dental implants are not well-suited for those who use tobacco.
“Tobacco also stains teeth and the tongue, which makes a person appear older, and can diminish the taste and olfactory senses,” says Dr. Saghezchi.
Drink Plenty Of Water
Saliva is the mouth’s natural defense against dental caries-causing bacteria and essential for dental health. Patients who experience dry mouth because of prescription medications or mouth breathing caused by obstructed nasal passages need to drink extra water or try using sugar-free chewing gum or candy to stimulate saliva production.
Eat Well For Oral Health
Eating a well-balanced diet is good for oral and overall health. The American Dietetic Association recommends eating food like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, low-fat dairy and lean protein, while avoiding sugary and fatty foods, for health and wellness.
“I would emphasize the part where people are better off avoiding sugary or carbonated beverages like soda, sweet tea, sports drinks and energy drinks,” says Dr. Saghezchi. “Soda especially is very hard on teeth. Many of these beverages contribute to teeth staining.”
