The Cosmetic Dentist Difference: Why You Should Choose An Accredited One

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA—Many people do not know whether they should choose a general dentist or cosmetic dentist for procedures like veneers, dental implants or crowns.

Dr. Khalil “Dr. Sage” Saghezchi, who is a cosmetic dentist in San Jose, says that people leaning towards a general dentist might not be aware of the differences between the two and how much the final results may vary.

“An excellent general dentist will deliver high-quality, functional restorations,” says Dr. Saghezchi, who founded his practice, Smile Gallery, in 1988. “But cosmetic dentistry is a blend of science and artistry, so a cosmetic dentist is the best way to get the most natural-looking, aesthetically-pleasing smile.”

Cosmetic dentistry procedures include tooth-colored fillings, veneers, dentures, teeth whitening, laser gum reshaping, dental implants, bonding and more. Some are strictly cosmetic, but many of them are also used for restoring damaged, broken or missing teeth.

Half of the people surveyed in a recent study done by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry said they did not like their smile, but 99.7 percent of the survey’s participants said that they think a smile is an important social asset. Because of statistics like that, Dr. Saghezchi says he expects the number of people seeking cosmetic dentistry procedures to continue to increase.

How Is A Cosmetic Dentist Different?

Cosmetic dentistry’s main focus is to improve the appearance of a person’s teeth, mouth and smile, whereas traditional dentistry is about oral hygiene and preventing, diagnosing and treating oral disease.

“A lot of dentists say they are cosmetic dentists, but only a select few are actually accredited with the AACD,” says Dr. Saghezchi, who has been an accredited member since 1992.

An Accredited Member of the AACD is a dental professional who advanced their level of education and demonstrated a high level of proficiency in cosmetic dentistry. Accreditation involves a rigorous clinical testing process, written examination, oral examination and a series of clinical cases covering different situations and levels of difficulty.

The AACD has nearly 7,000 members in more than 70 countries but less than 300 members have achieved accredited status. Cosmetic and reconstructive dentists, dental laboratory technicians, educators, researchers, students, hygienists and dental assistants are all eligible for membership with the Academy.
